ASUU May Call Off Strike On Thursday?

There are indications that the on-going strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities might be called off next Thursday. Governor of Benue State, Mr Gabriel Suswam who dropped this hint Friday said ASUU and the Federal Government had reached agreements on all the contentious issues that led to the industrial action except two.
Suswam who was appointed as Chairman of the Needs Assessment Implementation Committee of the Federal Government said after next Thursday’s deliberations between his Committee and the various agencies of government funding tertiary education, all the contentious issues would likely be resolved. Speaking to news men in Abuja after attending a meeting between the Federal Government’s delegation and ASUU, Suswam said that agreements had been reached by both parties on all issues except two.

Said he: “We reached agreements on all issues except two. These two issues are those of earned allowances of lecturers and intervention for the federal universities. These are the only issues that are still outstanding.” The Benue Governor further said he believed that by next week after his Committee would have arrived at an agreement on all the issues, ASUU would call off the strike. He continued: ”The SGF would meet with the leadership of ASUU on the issue of earned allowances by next Monday.

Then my committee which is dealing with the issue of the needs assessment of the universities would meet again next Thursday and take another look at all the infrastructural deficits which the federal universities are facing. If you go to our universities, you would agree that they are facing infrastructural deficits and that is why my committee would meet with all the funding agencies next Thursday for the purpose of prioritizing all the projects that need to be executed. We are going to invite all the agencies that are involved in the funding of the universities including the Central Bank of Nigeria.” Suswam further stated that the issues on agreements have been reached include: those of retirement age for university lecturers- which has now been increased from 65 to 70 years; the constitution of the governing councils of the universities which has already been done by the Government; the setting up of a pension administrator and the issue of persuading companies operating in the country to set up research centers in the universities.

Said he: “As far as I am concerned, if the issues concerning intervention and earned allowances are resolved next week, then the strike could be called off” Among those who attended the meeting were Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Ministerof Labour, Hon. Emeka Wogu, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayatu Rufai and President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge.

Funke Akindele Was Just Unlucky – Actors Guild

The Actors Guild of Nigeria has expressed concern over the controversy surrounding the break in the marriage between popular Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, and her husband, Mr. Almaroof Oloyede, describing the development as “unfortunate.”
The Chairman of AGN, FCT, Abuja chapter, Mr. Onwurah Agility, speaking in an interview said some marriages were not meant to be.

Onwurah said, “because I am an actor does not mean I have to die in my marriage if it is not working out. We are humans like others, blood runs in our veins like other people.

“Marriage in Nollywood is not different from other marriages. But because we are the mirror of the society, the face of the screen and role models to many, if there is a problem in our marriage, it makes noise more than any other. There are many people in the industry that have been married for many years without separating.

“What happened to Funke (Akindele) is unfortunate but like she said, may be they were not to be husband and wife and she has learnt her lessons. It could have been anybody.

“The theory and stories that actors’ marriages don’t last are very wrong. I have been married for five years and still counting, likewise so many other actors in the industry,” he said.

Akindele, had while confirming the crash of her marriage, said she had learnt from her mistakes and had no grudge against her former husband.

25 killed In Nigeria Gunmen Attacks In Maiduguri

Mali troops retake Konna

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, July 28 (Xinhua) -- At least 25 people were killed in separate weekend attacks by gunmen in northeast Nigeria's Borno State, military authorities confirmed on Sunday.
In an electronic message to Xinhua, Lt. Haruna Mohammed Sani, spokesperson of the military-led Multi-national Joint Task Force, said the gunmen, believed to be members of the Boko Haram sect, opened fire on civilians and local security workers in Dawashi District of Kukawa local government area of Borno State, which borders Chad.
"A group of local security workers from Maiduguri stormed the Dawashi Village in search of Boko Haram members when the suspected sect members came out fully armed and fired sporadic shots that killed over 20 innocent civilians, while a dozen others secured serious gunshot injuries," he explained.
Five more people were killed in another attack at Mainok, miles away from Maiduguri, the state capital known as stronghold of Boko Haram members, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, spokesperson of the Joint Task Force, told Xinhua in a separate statement.
Most of the victims of the first attack in Dawashi Village were fishermen and traders who plied their business in the riverine community, Haruna said.
According to the military officer, the wounded victims are currently being treated at the headquarters of the Multi-national Joint Task Force in Baga, with the aid of a field ambulance with a humanitarian support mission.
"Heavily armed Quick Reaction Group from the Multi-national Joint Task Force had been deployed to ensure the safety of lives and property in the area. The general area of Dawashi, Daban Masara and Malan Karanti are known to be suspected Boko Haram- infested areas," he added.
Borno State, located in Nigeria's northeast region, is a flashpoint of attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram since 2009, when the sect launched its insurgency targeting churches, security facilities, schools and villages.

Pastor Killed During Argument With Neighbour (photo)

A 67-year-old pastor, Monday Ojajuni, was allegedly killed by a woman, Temidayo Oladele, in front of his church in Mile 12.
Punch reports that the deceasedwho was the Superintendent Evangelist of Celestial Church of God, Mile 12, died during a confrontation with Oladele over the latter’s decision to scoop some sand in front of his church.
The 19-year-old daughter of the deceased, Oluwaseun, said she witnessed the incident on July 19, 2013.
She said, “The woman (Oladele) came to pack sand in front of the church and another cleric, Assistant Superintendent Evangelist Samuel Oteghene, told her not to pack the sand. When my father arrived at the scene, Oteghene went inside.
“But the woman rebuffed all entreaties not to pack the sand, instead, she turned violent and tore my father’s robe.
“My father then told her that she would run mad within seven days. When she heard this, she pushed my father and he fell, hitting hit his head on the ground and died. I reported the matter at Mile 12 Police Post. From there it was transferred to Ketu Police Station.”
Members of the church had earlier prayed for Monday with the hope that he would wake up, but to no avail.
It was learnt it was after a medical doctor confirmed Monday’s death that it dawned on them that he was beyond redemption.

Police sources said Ketu Police Division had arrested Oladele, while the case had also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.
At the SCID, the suspect, who claimed to be 65 years, said she did not kill the cleric. She explained that he died during a struggle with her.
She said, “Around 11.30am on Friday, I went with a shovel to the front of the church which is behind my house to pack some sand. I was challenged by members of the church.
“The pastor (Monday) started struggling for the shovel with me. The shovel tore his clothes. He cursed me, saying that I would die within the next seven days. We struggled until he fell to the ground and I left. I did not injure him and I did not know that he was dead until later.”
Our correspondent, who visited Monday’s family home on Omobanta Street, Mile 12, observed as sympathisers condole with the family.
A banner, hanging in front of the house, displayed the picture of the deceased. The banner read, ‘Monday Elijah Ojajuni, 1947-2013, Rest in Peace’
The eldest son of the deceased, Moses, described his father as an easy-going man.
He said, “My father was fasting on that day, but he went to the church to conduct a programme. Who would have known that that was the last time we would see him?”
He said his father was survived by 11 children and two wives, many of whom were still dependent on him.
“My father was a retired civil servant. He worked at the Lagos State Ministry of Works for many years. He had four sons and seven daughters,” he said.
He added that the suspect’s account of what happened on the day was not correct.
He said, “The woman had earlier come to pack sand from the front of our church prior to my father’s death and she had been warned not to come back.
“After my father confronted her, he attempted to go back into the church, but she pulled him by the cape. Because it rained on that day, the sand was slippery, causing him to hit his head against the ground.”
Our correspondent, who also visited the church, observed a condolence register in front of the church gate.
The members, however, refused to talk to our correspondent, saying they had left everything to God.
When contacted on the telephone, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, confirmed Oladele’s arrest.
He said the matter was being investigated at the Homicide Department of the SCID.

Shocking Photo: Cousins Die While Having S'ex.

Hell was let loose at Umualianya kindred Umumpe, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA of Imo State last Monday when a man, Mr Mathias Nwoko and his female Cousin, Angela Ihuoma Anyanwu, met their untimely death while making love to each other. Sources in the community told source that the late Mathias, 45, had returned home from his Onitsha base to attend the priestly ordination of his kinsman, Rev. Fr. Anayochukwu Onuoha, held at Mater Dei Cathedral, Umuahia, Abia State last Saturday June 20 2013.
It was learnt that all through the ordination ceremony, Mathias and the late Angela were literally tied to each other, with the latter taking the front seat of the former’s jeep. Their entanglement was said to have continued the next day, Sunday, during the ceremony marking the first Holy and Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Ghost Parish, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke. The deceased were also seen together at the ordination reception and later at the compound of the new priest where they were dancing to the music coming from Mathias’ car’s loudspeakers, while he occasionally was shooting gunshots from his pump action gun as Angela fed him with cartridges.
Interestingly, the deceased cousins were among family members who received prayers from the new priest, who earlier enjoined the people of the community to shun hypocrisy, atrocities and other iniquities if they must avoid God’s anger. The late Mathias who was said to have been married for 13 years without any child, however, returned home with a young girl as his fiancée who he left in the house. It was gathered that while the fiancée was home watching videos and waiting for Mathias, he only returned around 11pm and told her to go to sleep while he collected torchlight to see Angela off to her house. But that was not to be as the duo diverted to Mathias’ semi-completed building.

Worried by her daughter’s non arrival to the house, Angela’s mother called her phone line but Mathias was said to have answered the phone telling the woman that her daughter was with him. Also, alarmed by Mathias’ absence in the house up till Monday morning, his fiancée began to look for him within the house and was shocked to have stumbled on the naked but entangled bodies locked in death. She immediately alerted Mathias’ family members who could not believe their eyes. Also, Angela’s mother who was returning from Morning mass was simply speechless at the sight of the deceased.

The lady who was on top of the man had her blouse on but naked from the waist region while the man had his singlet on his neck. The two were dead.Their bodies were removed and deposited at Holy Rosary Hospital, Ogbor Nguru in Aboh Mbaise LGA. When contacted, the state police public relations officer (PPRO), Mrs Joy Elemoko, promised to call back to inform our reporter about the outcome of police investigation.

Man Stabbed Over 10 Naira

The police at Idimu Police Division have arrested and charged a 24-year old man, Kunle Oyebanji, before Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly stabbing a retailer, Umoru Musa, over N10 cigarette.
Oyebanji was charged with assault and refusing to pay for a stick of cigarette to Musa who sells provisions at 1, Pipeline Street, Idimu, Lagos.

Narrating what happened, Musa said Oyebanji usually buys provisions from him on credit. But after some months, Musa said he stopped selling to him when he refused to pay his debts and threatened him whenever he asked for his money.

On the fateful day, Musa said the suspect came to his kiosk and demanded for a stick cigarette but he refused to sell to him. But instead of leaving, Musa alleged that Oyebanji forcefully picked the cigarette and smoked at the kiosk.
Musa alleged that Oyebanji refused to pay for the cigarette when he demanded for his money. Instead, Oyebanji became angry and questioned Musa for asking him for the money.

In annoyance it was alleged that Oyebanji brought out a knife from his pocket and stabbed Musa several times.

When Musa began to bleed and slump, Oyebani allegedly fled from the scene of the incident.

The matter was reported at Idimu Police Division, while Musa was rushed to a nearby hospital in the area.

Oyebanji was later arrested and charged to court.

When he was arraigned in court, he pleaded not guilty.

Oyebanji admitted that he went to Musa’s kiosk to buy cigarette on credit but he promised to pay him.

He said the problem began when Musa insisted that he must pay him before leaving the kiosk .

Oyebanji said he explained to him that he had no money on him but Musa insisted on collecting his money.

The suspect said the argument resulted in exchange of words and a fight between them.

The presiding magistrate, Mr P. E. Nwaka, granted Oyebanji bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till 14 August.

Commercial Motorcycle Rider in Court for Raping Passanger

A commercial motorcyclist, John Ugwu, on Friday appeared before an Enugu State High Court for alleged rape.
The prosecutor, Mrs. Chinyere Ugwuja, alleged that the accused raped the victim when he was conveying her to her village at Amaeke Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area on May 25, 2011.
Ugwuja said an eyewitness alerted the police who rushed to the scene around 10 p.m. on the fateful day and rescued the victim.

She said the accused picked the victim from 9th Mile on her way from Onitsha, but rather than take her to her destination, he diverted to a bush and raped her.

He urged the court to evolve the necessary constitutional provisions in sanctioning him as he had no case to defend in this situation.

The counsel to the accused, Mr. Emeka Uzoegbu, said his client was not a rapist but a commercial motorcyclist who was working for his daily bread.

“He was just a mere motorcycle rider popularly called Okada operating along the 9th Mile axis. It is true that he conveyed the victim to her uncle’s place off Ama Brewery, but he did not rape her,” he said.

Uzoegbu said there was a disagreement between them over the fare which resulted to a fight, adding that his client did not rape her as claimed.

“On his way coming back to the bus-stop at 9th Mile, he stopped at a nearby bush to answer the call of nature when the police arrested him and accused him of rape,” he said.

Mr. Justice Afam Nwobodo adjourned the case till 2nd of October for further hearing. (NAN)

DRAMA: How Fathia Balogun & Iyabo Ojo Almost Destroyed Toyin Aimakhu’s Marriage

There was said to be a mild drama between two actresses, Iyabo Ojo and Fathia Balogun during one of their colleagues, Toyin Aimakhu's wedding.
If not for the prompt intervention of some colleagues in the movie industry, the low-keyed but highly hyped wedding of Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu to his Tinsel actor husband, Niyi Johnson would have been marred by drama.

This is because Fathia Balogun and Iyabo Ojo nearly disrupted the ceremony with a fight. If you think a man might be the cause of the brouhaha, then you are very far from the 411.

As we reliably learnt from eye witnesses, seniority claims led to the rise of their adrenalins.

It was gathered that Fathia Balogun first got to the event held on Monday, July 8, 2013 at Sabitex Hotel, Lekki, Lagos, after the marriage registry at the Ikoyi Registry, before Iyabo Ojo got there. It was while Iyabo was greeting her colleagues that trouble started, which led to a hot exchange of words between the two stars.

Those who claimed to be at the event said when Iyabo got to where Fathia was sitting, she allegedly called the former wife of Saidi Balogun by her name, which angered Fathia. She was said to have told others at the event to warn Iyabo from calling her by her name if she cannot add the prefix ‘aunty’ to her name as a sign of respect in Yoruba land.

Iyabo didn’t take this lightly with Fathia, who reportedly insisted on knowing what Fathia would do is she refuses to add the prefix to her name. The two were almost throwing punches at each other but for the quick intervention of their colleagues.

The fight for the ‘aunty’ prefix is not new in the industry. Lizzy Anjorin and Iyabo only settled their bitter fight of many years because of the same reason.

Efforts to speak with Iyabo Ojo on this issue proved abortive, as her PA picked and claimed she is on set. But upon insisting the actress' aide declined to give her the phone for us to talk to her on this story.

Is Denrele Gay??? You Won't Believe His Response (SHOCKING PHOTOS)

Nigerian entertainer, Denrele Edun has been the source of quite a few controversies.
One of which is the question of his sexuality. Perhaps, due to his feminine and flamboyant nature, a lot of people have wondered if he is indeed homosexual.
He addresses the rumors below;

Is Derenle Gay?

I think people believe what they want to believe.

But a lot of people believe you are. And to prove them right, a picture of you Charley Boy went viral on the internet recently…

I don’t read the news, I make the news. The thing is people tend to look for loopholes when they see you doing well. And since people feel I’m feminine in nature, then they think I’m gay. But the truth is I don’t really care about what people say because I’m not fashioned according to what the society expects. And also I think for my personality, if I were gay, the news would have grown from speculations and would have been in people’s face.

On the part of Charley Boy and me, I was not expecting the paparazzi that came with the picture.

So what was the picture about then?

I really don’t want to go into details, but it could have been a controversial agenda, it could have a been a publicity stunt, it could have been the real deal and it could have been photoshopped, but whatever it was, people should just go ahead and make their conclusions.

So why is Denrele still single?

I’m a hustler and I’m still trying to get myself together. When the time comes, I’ll get married definitely, but there’s no one in the picture now. I’m searching and ready to mingle.

Who is your ideal woman?

I like someone who would not try to change me and who would understand the complexity that I am. I want someone simple and absolutely free and not intimidated by what I represent.

It will probably be interesting to know that he did not outrightly deny being gay, and he avoided pronouns when replying the question regarding his ideal "woman".

Anyway, check out the infamous pictures of him and Charly Boy below. And as for his sexuality, looks like he will continue to keep us guessing.

Woman Beats 11-Year Old Maid To Death (LOOK)

A middle aged woman simply identified as madam Agnes is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID Panti, for allegedly beating an 11-year-old child that was staying with her to death.

The deceased identified as Angelina, was reportedly taken from her parents in far away Ogoja, Cross River state by Agnes, with a promise to send her to school, when she was barely four years old. Angelina, grew up calling her guardian mother, apparently unaware she was not her biological mother.

But things as gathered, fell apart for late Angelina after she turned 6, as she was reportedly made to carry out overwhelming house chores. Initial rebuff of such attitude from madam Rose who crime Alert learnt is related to Angelina’s mother, by neighbour was reportedly greeted with an outburst.
The dehumanising treatment on Angelina reached its peak last Friday, as she was reportedly beaten to death by her madam, for failure to carry out chores as instructed.

Investigation by Crime Alert revealed that on that fateful day, at about 5pm, Madam Agnes returned home screaming at the little girl whom neighbours said was not feeling too well. Madam Agnes reportedly dragged Angelina into her apartment located on 75 Barracks lllane, Ajegunle and started beating her. The helpless girl was said to have shouted for help. But none was forth coming. Then, all of a sudden she seized crying.

Neighbours later became apprehensive after they sighted madam Agnes rush out of her room to a medicine store opposite the building. She reportedly came back with a nurse who went inside with her and rushed out again to get something.

At this point, a neighbour told Crime Alert during a visit at the building yesterday that “ we suspected all was not well. When the nurse came out , we asked what the problem was and she told us that Angelina had fainted. We all rushed inside, only to behold Angelina’s lifeless body on the ground.

On further observation, we discovered a pestle by the side with blood stain and we concluded she could have used it on Angelina”.

Another neighbour who also spoke on condition of anonymity said, “ We are not surprised at Angelina’s demise because madam Agnes had always threatened. At the slightest provocation, she would beat her with any object at her disposal. At times she would smash bottle on her head and at other times, she would use a stool on her. At a point we got angry but there was nothing we could do to alert Angelina’s biological parents”.

Asked why none of them bothered to report the abuse on Angelina to the Police, another neighbour replied, “ Police? You want madam Agnes to fight you? Even if you attempt to rescue Angelina from her grip whenever she was being beaten, Agnes would fight you and ask if you were her relative.

At a point, she resorted to locking the doors whenever she wanted to beat the girl, in order to prevent anyone from coming to her rescue”.

Everyone who spoke with Crime Alert described the late Angelina as a dutiful girl who never complained while carrying out any of the house chores. At times she reportedly missed schools in order to finish the chores before the arrival of her guardian. Most times neighbours said she would be made to finish the chores before taking her first meal either at noon or evening.

“Saturdays were the most hectic for the little girl as she would be made to wash her guardians clothes and those of her two grown children”.
