Bus Conductor strips self unclad, stabs LASTMA Official
A conductor of a commercial bus identified simply as Ibrahim has been arraigned in a Lagos court for allegedly stabbing an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Akingbohungbe Olalekan, in the hand.
The driver of a Volkswagen wagon with number plate LAGOS XB 990 AAA, on Wednesday around 3.10pm was obstructing the free flow of traffic by picking and allowing passengers to alight from his bus at an unauthorized place in Ojota area of the state. He was apprehended by Olalekan and another LASTMA official, Alabi Emmanuel, who attempted to impound his vehicle. Olalekan ended up getting stabbed.
whisperNaija.com learnt that Ibrahim and the driver descended on the officials, beat them up and tore their uniforms. It was learnt that Ibrahim later stripped himself unclad and stood in front of the bus. whisperNaija.com correspondent gathered that a team of policemen and traffic enforcement agents later arrived at the scene.
But the driver reportedly fled while the 28-year-old conductor was arrested and arraigned at a special offences tribunal in Alausa on Wednesday.
At the tribunal, Ibrahim was charged with breach of public peace, obstructing state officers from carrying out their lawful duty, assault and traffic violation by picking passengers in places that were not bus stops.
When his plea was taken, he pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Magistrate Yetunde Phinero admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties in the like sum. She adjourned the case till June 21, 2012. But the accused was remanded as he could not meet the bail condition.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, on Friday warned that the agency would prosecute traffic offenders, especially the violent ones.
Edu , who said prosecuting traffic offenders would serve as a deterrent to errant motorists, said the warning became imperative in view of the rising cases of attacks on LASTMA officials in recent times.
He said, “LASTMA officials have been trained to be civil in their approach and we do not tolerate act of indiscipline among our officials. But a situation where they are attacked while performing their official duties by errant drivers would no longer be condoned.
“The law is no respecter of anybody and it is necessary that motorists obey traffic rules and regulations to ensure sanity on our roads.
“Rather than take the laws into their hands, we implore motorists to report errant LASTMA officials and we assure them that we will carry out a thorough investigation and act accordingly. We do not condone any act of indiscipline among our officials and we do not cover them up if they erred.”
Benin Stowaway Boy: Government Officials Question Mum
Evelyn Oikhena and son, Daniel OikhenaOfficials of the Department of State Services, DSS, in Edo State, yesterday, quizzed the mother of the 15-year-old Daniel Oikhena, who emerged from the wheel compartment of an Arik Air flight from Benin Airport to Lagos, last Saturday.
Mrs Evelyn Oikhena, who confirmed her invitation to newsmen, said she was shocked when her sister-in-law in Germany called her to say that she read the incident on the internet.
She said she was shocked that her son could embark on such a life-threatening journey to where he had never been before.
Speaking in Benin City, yesterday, Mrs Oikhena said her son was at home with his elder sister, Tonia, his two younger brothers and his grand mother while the mother was away to visit her elder sister who had put to bed.
She said: “So I was shocked when I came back Saturday morning, and they told me that Daniel has disappeared and when I asked my daughter she said she had a quarrel with him because the boy was watching movies late into the night.
“I had even gone to report the matter at Evbuotubu police station before my sister-in-law from Germany called me to say that the story of my son was in the internet.
“One of Daniel’s younger brothers said he saw him remove his school books from his bag. So I asked my neighbhours whether any of them saw him and they told me that around 5 to 6 am, they heard sounds that somebody was opening the gate but never thought it was my son. He doesn’t go out. What I know is that he is always watching movies in the house but he doesn’t have friends.
“I went to Oba Market police station, they referred me to Evbuotubu police station. When I got there, they said they would declare him missing after 24 hours and that I should come back the next day. I went to inform my pastor and other members, my friends and other relations.”
However, contrary to Mrs Oikhena's claims, Daniel who thought the Arik plane was US bound said he runaway to escape his parents whom he said has been maltreating him.
Regardless of how conversant I am with this story, I'm still gobsmacked at this 15 year old boy's guts.

All 25,000 Students Fail In University Admission Test
Every single student who applied for admission into the University of Liberia failed the school’s admission test, and there were over 25,000 of them!
A university official said students who took the $25 exam did not have a basic understanding of English, the BBC reports, and it was the first time that all entrants failed.
Liberia’s President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has said the country’s education system is still “in a mess” following a civil war that ended a decade ago.
Education Minister Etmonia David-Tarpeh will meet with university officials to discuss the 100 percent failure rate, the BBC reports.
“I know there are a lot of weaknesses in the schools but for a whole group of people to take exams and every single one of them to fail, I have my doubts about that,” David-Tarpeh said. “It’s like mass murder.”

Angelo Speaks About His Affair With Beverly
First of all, Angelo has denied his widely publicized "girlfriend", saying: “I didn’t have a girlfriend before I got into the house, but I had someone I told to wait for me so that we would see what would happen when I get out of the house. I will be focused on what I want to do as a person and then focus on my relationship with Bev and see where we will take it to,”
Asked why he had sex with Beverly openly in the bath, Angelo said:
“We didn’t have sex. We talked about it. There were some things I said I wasn’t going to do in the house. I respect my mum so much. Before I got into the house, there were things I told my mummy I wasn’t going to do. I wasn’t butt naked. It looked as if we were having sex in that bathtub [but] we were just kissing. I couldn’t take advantage of Beverly because I respect her so much.”Angelo is kind of insisting that what we saw on tape is film tricks or what? #DontGetIt. Anyway, he has said he intends to take his relationship with Beverly to the next level once she is done with BBA.
“We will try and work things out and see how we can make our relationship work. At the same time, I hope the people of Nigeria don’t hate Bev. I would love to come to Nigeria and experience Nigerian culture and take lots of pepper,” Angelo added.

Stranded And Starving Boko Haram Member Slaughter Fellow Members For Food in Borno Forest - Suspect
Mallam Momodu Bukar, a suspected member of the outlawed sect told newsmen on Saturday in Maiduguri that he fled the camp at the forest on Thursday when he could no longer cope with the situation.
“I thank God that I escaped because I would have been slaughtered by now to provide meal for my colleagues at the camp,” Bukar said.
According to him, he was captured by a youth vigilante group, popularly known as the civilian JTF at Baga Road motor park, Maiduguri, on Friday.
He said, the extremists had been in the forest since May, when they were dislodged from Marte, Marte Local Government Area, by the Joint Task Force on Operation Restore Order after the declaration of the state of emergency.
“Our group, consisting of about 300 well-armed combatants, headed for Magumeri on the orders of the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau, shortly before the military took over Marte Camp.
“We have been wandering in the forest. We have exhausted our food and water supply, and so, everybody became hungry,” he said.
He said since then, they could not reach their leader, Shekau due to the closure of GSM services by the Defence Headquarters.
He said, “It all started last Monday when three of the combatants in camp died of acute hunger, and it became obvious that all of us will die if action was not taken. The leader of the group, Abu Omar, directed that a non-combatant member be slaughtered to provide meal for the rest.
“The meat provided meal for the combatant for just two days and another person was killed in the same manner on Wednesday. So, it became certain that I might be the next person since I am also a non-combatant member.”
The suspected militant fled the forest after he volunteered to help search for drinking water for the group in a nearby village.
“I left the camp on Thursday evening after agreeing to fetch water from the village. After leaving the camp, I started running until I arrived at Magumeri town, so, I slept in the motor park before boarding a vehicle to Maiduguri with the little money on me.” he said.
An official of the vigilante group, Mallam Ajid Asheik, said the suspect would be handed to the Joint Task Force on Operation Restore Order for investigation.
Teenager Flies Arik Air From Benin To Lagos Hiding In Tyre Hole
A teenager named Daniel Ikehina unbelievably beat airline and airport security at the Benin airport today Saturday August 24th and sneaked into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik flight. The boy flew safely with the aircraft which left Benin around 9am today and landed at Murtala Muhammed airport, hidden throughout in the undercarriage. He was immediately arrested by airport security after passengers saw him emerging from the aircraft tyre hole.
Arik spokesman Banji Ola explains what happened:
Arik spokesman Banji Ola explains what happened:
The management of Arik Air has expressed shock over the incident wondering how the teenager beat the Aviation Security personnel at the Benin Airport to get to the runway.
The pilot of Arik Air flight W3 544, departing Benin Airport for Lagos at 9.00am today 24th August, 2013 reported to the control tower the presence of a strange boy in the bush about 200 – 300 meters at the end of runway 23.
The control tower told the Captain that they were sending security men to the place to arrest the boy.
As the captain was making his final turn, preparatory for take-off, a cabin crew called his attention to the information by some of the passengers that they saw a boy running towards the airplane.
The First Officer confirmed that they had observed it earlier and alerted the control tower which responded that they have sent the patrol team to arrest the boy. The Captain again reported to the control tower and was informed that the situation was under control and that he had been cleared for take-off.
On arrival at the domestic wing of MMA, Lagos, a teenage boy, who apparently had sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well jumped out and was arrested by Arik personnel and handed over to FAAN security.
Meanwhile the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) blamed Arik Air for the incident.
FAAN said in a statement:
"Arik Air acted with impunity by not stopping the aircraft to check when the crew and ground personnel’s attention was drawn to an abnormality on the tarmac. This is arrant display of impunity. The aircraft should not have taxied further, but return to the apron until a proper check is carried out on all parts of the aircraft. FAAN will not tolerate such impunity henceforth from Arik or any airline. Any violation would be met with applicable sanctions.

OMG! Switzerland To Produce Condom For Children?
The Swiss Aids Federation has thrown its weight behind the production of condoms for children aged between 12 and 14 years old.
The smaller sized condoms are the result of a study by the Federal Commission on Children and Youth which revealed that teenagers in Switzerland were having unprotected sex because they could not find condoms that fit them.
The study also found that more children younger than 14 are sexually active than there was in the 1990s.
The condoms are 45 mm in diameter instead of the standard 49 to 56 mm diameter and will be distributed through schools.
The box with six condoms can also be bought at shops for $7 (N1129).
Transgender Woman Beaten To Death By Multiple Men Yelling Gay Slurs
According to Mail Online
A transgender woman in New York has died after being beaten by a group of men who attacked her and yelled gay slurs.
The victim, 21-year-old Islan Nettles, died Thursday in a Harlem hospital when she was taken off life support five days following the attack.
The attacker, a 20-year-old man named Paris Wilson, was arrested for assault but now that the victim has died he may face murder charges.
The attack on Nettles was the latest in a spate of bias incidents this year in New York and a total of 68 have been reported so far this year, showing a significant increase from the 54 that were reported in all of last year.
Nettles and a friend, another transgender woman, were out Saturday evening in Harlem when they ran into a group of men and one pounced, punching Nettles in the face, police said.
The New York Post reports that the attack took place after Wilson began flirting with Nettles, before he realized she was transgendered.
Once that became clear, his friends started teasing him and he proceeded to attack her.
After the attack, Nettles was hospitalized, slipped into a coma and later died.
The witness eventually told detectives about the anti-gay remarks- after initially leaving them out of the criminal report- and the hate crimes task force took over the investigation.
Detectives are looking whether the suspect had propositioned Nettles.
Upgraded charges are possible following the medical examiner’s ruling, police said.
Nettle’s sister, Elana, said in an interview Friday that she and her mother were coping well so far but did not comment further.
The bias attacks this year range from yelled slurs to the May killing of a 32-year-old gay man in Greenwich Village. Police stepped up patrols this summer in response.
In May, police said Mark Carson, 32, was first taunted with homophobic slurs, then shot in the head in Greenwich Village, not far from the site of 1969 riots that helped give rise to the gay rights movement.
A suspect was arrested on a charge of murder as a hate crime. The killing, and other bias attacks, sparked a summer protest attended by thousands.
Some of the other bias incidents this summer included an assault last week where two men were attacked in Chelsea.
Christine Quinn, the city’s first openly gay City Council speaker and a mayoral candidate, denounced the most recent attack.
‘An attack against one person, or one community, is an assault against all New Yorkers,’ she said in a joint statement with other council members.
‘We ask all New Yorkers to come together, to embrace our differences and to denounce hate violence.’

'We Will Soon Be Able To Resurrect The Dead'-Claims Heart Specialist As He Reveals New Medical Breakthrough On Reviving Corpses Within A Day Of Being Dead
Cardiac patients at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York are already a living testament to the success of Dr. Sam Parnia's unusual revival claims. According to the latest available statistics, nearly twice as many patients are resuscitated there every year compared to other U.S. hospitals -- the average resuscitation rate at Stony Brook is an astounding 33 percent, which contrasts sharply with the 18 percent average elsewhere.
So how does it all work? The techniques he advocates are not cryogenics – freezing the body immediately after death – but cooling it down to best preserve brain cells while keeping up the level of oxygen in the blood. This buys time to fix the underlying problem and restart the heart, he claims.
Utilizing the latest available medical technologies, Dr. Parnia carefully cools down the bodies of qualifying "dead" patients and pumps up their tissues with oxygen. This process, he says, prevents them from truly "dying," as it basically just puts their lives on hold and gives physicians time to intercede and work their magic. The process is so effective, claims Dr. Parnia, that it could have revived the life of James Gandolfini, the former star of the popular television series, The Sopranos, who is believed to have died from a heart attack.
"I believe if he died here, he could still be alive," said Dr. Parnia recently to Germany's Der Spiegel magazine. "We'd cool him down, pump oxygen to the tissues ... clinically dead, he could then be cared for by the cardiologist. He would make an angiogram, find the clot, take it out, put in a stent and we would restart the heart."
Every victim of Titanic disaster could have been saved using modern techniques, says Dr. Parnia
These may sound like wild claims, but Dr. Parnia is confident in the power of this breakthrough technology. He is so confident, in fact, that he even wrote a book called Erasing Death, which deals in depth with the subject of so-called modern resuscitation science and how it has the potential to literally change the course of history. If the 1,514 people who died after the Titanic sunk back in 1912 had died today, for instance, all of them could have been brought back to life using modern resuscitation techniques, claims Dr. Parnia, and the catastrophe could have been completely avoided.
"Death can no longer be considered an absolute moment but rather a process that can be reversed even many hours after it has taken place," wrote Dr. Parnia in a recent piece for The Huffington Post. "[I]t is only after a person actually dies that the cells in his body go through their own process of death, which can be manipulated through science."
Though it is not yet possible to bring a person back to life after he or she has been dead longer than about three hours, Dr. Parnia is convinced that advances in resuscitation technology over the next 20 years will make it possible for bodies that have been "dead" as long as 24 hours to be revived. As medical science continues to gain a better grasp on the process of death, it will only become increasingly possible to prevent it altogether.
"We may soon be rescuing people from death's clutches hours, or even longer, after they have actually died," says Dr. Parnia. "My basic message: The death we commonly perceive today in 2013 is a death that can be reversed."
You could call that resurrection, if you will. But I still call it resuscitation science.’
If this is truly possible, then its really good news....I think.

Man buries his baby alive after being born deformed
Pakistani police arrested a man accused of burying his newborn daughter alive, because she was physically deformed, officials said.
The shocking incident illustrates the extreme prejudice in Pakistan against children, especially girls, who are born with some type of physical deformity. They are often seen as shameful to the family, especially in the rural and impoverished countryside, where they are seen as a burden for the family.
Mohammed Anwar, a police officer in the city of Khanewal, in the eastern province of Punjab, said the boy was born at a hospital in the nearby city of Kacha Khoh.
After seeing his newborn daughter, the father told the family that the baby was stillborn and organized a funeral, the chief of police of the city, Shamshad Khalid, said.
The child began to cry at the funeral service and the cleric told the father to take the child to a hospital, said Khalid. Instead, the man, identified by police as Chand Khan, buried her. Residents alerted authorities after seeing her father carrying the baby to the cemetery after which the police raided the man’s house and arrested him on charges of murder.
Khan, who has four other children, did not tell his wife about his plans to get rid of the child, the police chief said, adding that the woman was still in the hospital when the baby was buried.
Mohammad Farooq, a doctor at al-Shifa hospital in Kacha Khoh, said he had seen the child after birth. He said she was healthy and alive, but had a large head and the characteristics of being “abnormal”.
“I am a doctor in the same hospital where the child was born. This man came to me yesterday with a request that had to do something to get rid of his daughter, but I rebuffed him and told him to leave,” said Farooq. “Nobody has the right to kill anyone because of their physical deformity,” he said.
He approached another doctor and requested that the doctor poison his daughter to death. This other doctor also refused his request.
Police said they will exhume the child’s body and perform an autopsy. The father could be sentenced to death if convicted of killing his daughter.
